Ringle, The Sequel!
The Thankyoumas continues:
- Jessica Walter/Lucille Bluth: with 2005 designated as the break-out year for "older-women" roles (Joan Allen, Meryl Streep, heck--they're even calling Diane Keaton a "matriarch" these days), the woman who for me personifies graceful aging is Lucille Bluth. Anybody who can blurt out the line "I don’t understand the question, and I won’t respond to it" with a completely straight face (which is lifted every six months, BTW) has what I refer to as moxie. Or unabashed selfishness. Whichever....
- Kathy Griffin: Margaret Cho is the one who gets all the press as the edgy comedienne (at least to me, but that's a long story), but I'm afraid Margaret can't hold a verbena-scented candle against Kathy. You may have seen her as one of the back-up dancers in Medusa: Dare to be Truthful (when or when will that be re-released in DVD?) or Brooke Shield's wise-cracking co-worker in Suddenly Susan, but she's in her catty glory during her stand-up routines: she's the bitchy, funny friend who sidles next to you and talks trash about everybody behind their backs, except "everybody" are the celebs she runs into. Catch her stand-up specials on Bravo--NOW!
- Will Ferrell's Disappearing Fifteen Minutes: seriously--Kicking & Screaming? Anchorman? The mysterious hubbub surrounding Will Ferrell seems to be dissipating as fast as free overnight shipping offers on Christmas Eve. However, The Producers' opening on Christmas Day may change all that, darn it....
- The Patriot Act: I'm going to buck the trend here and say that in some ways, the act has been a godsend for us librarians. Our Good Fight has gotten us more press than Kevin Federline's lap dances. Even the guy who painted my upstairs bedroom said "hey--you guys are fighting for our rights!" Doesn't get any sweeter than that.
- Finally, My Husband: Anyone who's been able to tolerate me for over twenty years deserves a very special shout-out. The secret? He learned early on not to take much of what I say seriously. Second, he's quite simply the funniest person I know. 'Ya gotta love someone who does a mean Linus Pauling impersonation.
Happy Holidays everyone! Let's hope 2006 turns out to be a much kinder year for folks....
